Species in these categories are among the most ancient of the plants, co-existing with the dinosaurs. Among these, cycads are among the jewels of our collection. Cycads are slow-growing, cone-bearing plants with thick foliage. Because of habitat loss and poaching, they are among the world’s most threatened plants. The Garden has 300 in its collection. You can find them in the Foster Succulent Garden, and the Scott Florida Garden. Other ancient plants include Norfolk pines (Araucaria heterophylla), bald cypress (Taxodium distichum var. distichum) and various species of ferns, both terrestrial and epiphytic.
