Event Description
Dr. Wilder will discuss the Herbarium of Southwestern Florida, a collection of nearly 40,000 preserved plant specimens assembled entirely by him. The herbarium ranks as the fifth-largest herbarium in Florida. Dr. Wilder will illustrate his talk with specimens from the herbarium. He will consider the value of the herbarium in terms of science, conservation, and art.

Dr. George Wilder is a retired Professor of Biology who taught at Cleveland State University. He obtained his Ph.D. degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and he undertook postdoctoral studies at Harvard University. He has published numerous papers pertaining to the anatomy, morphology, and taxonomy of vascular plants and he has assembled an herbarium (collection of preserved plant specimens) that currently numbers ca. 37,000 collections. Currently, he serves as the Botanist and Herbarium Curator at Naples Botanical Garden, and undertakes floristic research within south Florida. He is compiling an inventory of all species of vascular plants of Collier Seminole State Park.
