Event Description
Chris Woods has worked in the garden world as a director and gardener for over 30 years. In this illustrated lecture, Chris will talk about the gardens of the world that please him and the plants that excite him. In doing so, he will use the visual history of global gardens to stimulate the senses, as well as to describe practical examples of design that can be used for the home garden, whether you live in a mansion or condominium. He will express his passion for plants and the joy of horticulture and illuminate the intimate relationship between plants and humans and why our brains are particularly attracted to landscape, gardens and flowers. Participants will learn about the value of public gardens in advancing a healthy society and find out what needs to be done to help our children overcome ‘nature deficit disorder’.
- Date: Wednesday, December 2
- Time/Place: 6 – 8 pm, Naples Botanical Garden Kapnick Hall
- Cost: $15 members / $20 non-members
A native of England but now a U.S. citizen, Chris Woods started his career at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, where he was trained as a gardener. He came to the U.S. in 1981 and was, until April 2003, Director and Chief Designer of Chanticleer in Pennsylvania. After 20 years creating Chanticleer, he became Vice President for Horticulture and External Operations for the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden and in 2006 was appointed Director, the VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver, Canada. While pleased to be in Canada, his heart yearned for California and in January 2008 he was appointed Executive Director of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. After a successful period in northern California, he returned to his home near Santa Barbara, CA, where he operated his own design consulting business. He now resides in Benicia, CA, and is the Advancement Advisor for the Flora of North America Association. He is also a consultant to Kids Growing Strong, a national non-profit to teach children gardening for health and is currently engaged in writing a book on contemporary gardens around the world.
